Shift Manager: First Step Into Management

Shift managers run the restaurant during their shifts. They lead the crew, handle customer issues, manage cash, and ensure smooth operations. It's your first taste of leadership—and your fastest path to general manager.

Hourly Pay
$17-$24/hr
Annual (Full-Time)
$35K-$50K
Time to GM
18-36 months

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead the shift: Direct crew during peak hours, assign stations, keep service moving
  • Handle cash: Open/close registers, count tills, manage deposits
  • Customer escalation: Resolve complaints that crew can't handle
  • Basic scheduling: Help GM with crew scheduling and coverage
  • Training: Onboard new hires, teach them the ropes
  • Minor maintenance: Handle simple equipment issues, know when to call for help

Path to General Manager

Shift managers who consistently deliver results—smooth operations, great customer scores, clean audits—get promoted to assistant GM or directly to GM in high-growth brands.

Key: show you can run the restaurant without the GM present. Prove you can handle peak rushes, manage people, and solve problems independently.
