Square introduced Square for Drive-Thru on May 11, 2026, through an Early Access Program. The product links order entry, kitchen routing and customer handoff, with wider availability planned for summer.
Developed with The Howard Company and Nanonation, the product connects Square’s point of sale and kitchen displays with digital order confirmation and automatic order numbering. Those are the capabilities described in Square’s announcement.
An operator assessing the product needs to know whether a corrected order stays intact as it moves from the lane to the kitchen and pickup window.
The guest and kitchen should see the same order#
Imagine a test customer ordering a combo, changing the drink and then removing an ingredient from the entrée. The first question is whether the final choices appear clearly on the customer’s confirmation screen. The next is whether the appropriate kitchen station receives those same choices.
Both checks matter. A correct customer display cannot prevent a mistake if the kitchen receives an incomplete instruction. A correct kitchen instruction cannot resolve confusion if the guest sees an earlier version of the order.
The test should also include a change after the initial entry. Operators need to know who can revise the order and how staff distinguish the current instructions from an earlier version. This is a proposed acceptance test, not a report of a known defect in Square’s product.
To run that test, the restaurant needs its own menu configuration and station assignments in place. A demonstration using a simple sample menu would leave the difficult routing decisions untested.
Keep each order attached to the right car#
Automatic numbering is useful only when staff can maintain the connection between the order and the guest. In a trial, a restaurant could follow what happens when one vehicle waits longer for a modified item while a later order becomes ready first.
During those exceptions, staff need to see which items are complete, what remains and who is waiting. Include partial completion, a cancelled item and a pickup-window request in the trial.
Those scenarios put pressure on coordination rather than raw entry speed. A fast order-taking step can still lead to a slow or incorrect handoff if changes are difficult to follow.
Record lane entry and exit times alongside the intervals for ordering, preparation and handoff. Some work can overlap, so adding those intervals may overstate the guest’s elapsed wait. The complete journey shows whether a faster step actually helped the customer leave sooner.
Tests should also reflect the restaurant’s other channels. A drive-thru order can share production capacity with counter, pickup and delivery orders. A quiet-lane demonstration will not show how the proposed configuration behaves when those demands arrive together.
Early access requires a defined installation plan#
Square’s announcement describes its partners’ roles in menu boards, order-confirmation systems and installation. It does not provide a universal installation price or a measured wait-time improvement applicable to every restaurant.
An operator comparing options needs a site-specific scope that identifies the equipment, configuration, installation work and support responsibilities. The team should also establish which existing components can remain in use and which must change. A compatible product category does not establish compatibility with every installed system.
A pilot needs an operating fallback as well. Staff should understand how to continue taking and fulfilling orders if a display or connection becomes unavailable. That procedure should be practiced before the new workflow becomes the restaurant’s only familiar way to serve the lane.
Before committing to a conversion schedule, operators need to confirm enrollment, installation dates, support coverage and which functions their trial will include.
A useful pilot ends with evidence the operator can act on: whether orders arrived intact, where staff needed to intervene and how long guests waited. That record can support a conversion decision more clearly than a demonstration of the fastest uncomplicated order.
