The restaurant industry's post-2020 rebound was weaker than first estimated. In 2021, sales rose 11% to $940 billion, the National Restaurant Association says, not 24% to $1.06 trillion. Its October 19 analysis says the gap later widened.

The revision cuts the Association's 2026 sales projection by $190 billion, from $1.55 trillion to $1.36 trillion. Projected growth remains 4.3%, or 0.8% after inflation. The difference is in estimated market size, not actual 2026 sales.

What changed#

The Census Bureau updated its monthly retail and foodservice estimates using more complete annual business data. Companies have weeks to answer a monthly survey, sometimes before their books are final. The annual survey draws on more reporting and later corrections. Census then benchmarks the monthly series against those annual totals. Its 2026 revision also includes historical corrections and updated seasonal adjustments, so a new baseline does not mean every month's growth rate stays untouched.

For the first time, this benchmark uses the Annual Integrated Economic Survey, which combines seven annual business surveys. Census produces the monthly estimates; the Association uses them as a building block for its broader restaurant and foodservice forecast. Those are related figures, but they are not the same series.

This matters when an operator compares a company's results with industry growth or sizes an expansion opportunity. A deck prepared with an old market projection has a different denominator from one using the revised figure. It should be updated consistently across years, rather than replacing one headline number and leaving old comparisons in place. The revised industry estimate does not change a restaurant's own receipts.
